Classification The genus name is preoccupied by a genus of Mollusca. In 1872 Haeckel assigned the genus to the synonymy of Ascetta (=Clathrina). But later, Borojevic et al. 1990 revived the genus name Soleniscus, but indicated a different type species. In the Systema Porifera, they renamed the genus as Soleneiscus when the existence of a senior homonym in Mollusca was discovered. Haeckel's Soleniscus is junior synomym of Clathrina, whereas Borojevic's et al.'s genus Soleniscus, now Soleneiscus, is so far a distinct genus in the order Clathrinida. [details]
