Taxonomy The synonymy of Cuthona punicea with Cuthona pustulata proposed by Cella et al. (2016) is not strongly supported and the two species are here maintained separate (as Tenellia). In the supplementary material of sequences the latter species is actually referred to as "cf. pustulata" and, for the single Cuthona punicea specimen studied, only 16S and
H3 genes were documented. There was no representation of C. pustulata from the NE Atlantic where the type locality is located. [details]
