Editor's comment There is no consensus about the concept of the Leptopontiidae, and its taxonomy is in a continuous state of flux.
Martínez Arbizu & Moura (1994) proposed the Leptopontiidae for Leptopontiinae, Psammopsyllinae and Arenopontiinae.
Huys & Conroy-Dalton (1996) did not adopt Martinez Arbizu & Moura's (1994) concept and regarded the Leptopontiinae as a subfamily of the Cylindropsyllidae in the sense of Huys & Ohtsuka (1993). Huys & Conroy-Dalton (1996) seemed not to follow Martínez Arbizu & Moura (1994) in incorporating the Psammopsyllinae in the Cylindropsyllidae, but they did not comment on this issue.
Huys et al. (1996) mantained the families Cylindropsyllidae, Leptopontiidae with its subfamilies Psammopsyllinae and Leptopontiinae, and raised the Arenopontiinae to family status as Arenopontiidae, but they did not give any reason for this course of action.
Cottarelli et al. (1998) suspected that the Psammopsyllinae deserved upgrading to family status, but they did not raised the Psammopsyllinae to family level.
Bruno et al. (1998) followed Martínez Arbizu & Moura (1994) and used the family name Leptopontiidae with the subfamilies Psamopsyllinae and Arenopontiinae.
Boxshall & Halsey (2004) provisionally adopted Martínez Arbizu & Moura's (1994) concept of the Leptopontiidae, but following Huys et al. (1996), they rejected Martínez Arbizu & Moura's (1994) proposal to synonymise Pararenopontia with Arenopontia.
Wells (2007) believed that each of the subfamilies included in the ‘extended Langian’ concept of the family Cylindropsyllidae—Cylindropsyllinae, Leptontiinae, Arenopontiinae and Psammopsyllinae—should be accorded family rank, and he listed them as such in his checklist.
Sak et al. (2008) mantained the family Arenopontiidae. [details]
