Alien species Marenzelleria neglecta originally only occurred in brackish water along the Atlantic coasts of North America. In 1985 the species reached the German region of the Baltic Sea, presumably via ballast water. In 2004, based on the specimens found in this area of the Baltic Sea - where it's today a very common species - the worm was described as a new species to science. In Belgium, the species was first reported in the Sea Scheldt near to Antwerp on 23 October 1996. The worm is bottom dwelling that feeds on particles found in the substrates. [details]
