Status David & Laurin (1996, p. 357-358), based on an analysis of 18 morphological characters of the corona, proposed to synonymize this species with Echinocardium capense Mortensen, 1907. Mironov (2006, p. 123-125), however, convincingly argues that pedicellarial characers and labrum shape of E. mortenseni do differ from E. capense and that more information on pedicellarial variability is needed to accept or reject the synonymization of these two species. [details]
