Spelling often written as Aphrodite, but spelling is checked in the work of Linnaeus (1758). [details]
Type species Type species Aphrodita aculeata Linnaeus 1758. Linnaeus presented two species, Aphrodita squamata and Aphrodita aculeata. Hartman (1959 catalogue) has Aphrodita aculeata as type species ("genotype"). Pettibone (1963: 13) and later Hutchings & McRae (1993: 286) state that Malmgren (1867) designated the type species as Aphrodita aculeata, but this is not correct, and it is difficult to see why they assert that. Malmgren only presents a record for Aphrodita genus of A. aculeata, in which he included Aphrodita borealis Johnston, 1840. The other species named by Linnaeus, Aphrodita squamata, is regarded as a species of Lepidonotus Leach. [details]
