Subgenus Eisig (1887) created subgenera Clistomastus and Tremomastus based on the number of genital pores, but subsequently these subgenera have been disregarded. Chamberlin (1919) pointed out that Tremomastus (Chamberlin misspelled it as Tremastomastus) contained N. latericeus (or more correctly contained synonyms of the Notomastus type species (Eisig did not discuss N. latericeus)) and thus the concept was for the nominal subgenus of Notomastus sensu stricto, with Tremomastus being an unnecessary synonym [details]
