Description Trichomes free-floating in freshwater plankton, solitary, straight or slightly coiled, constricted at the cross-walls, with indistinct mucilaginous envelopes (faculta-tive?), not attenuated towards ends, or very exceptionally in old trichomes with 2-3 terminal cells slightly narrower than other vegetative cells. Cells shortly bar¬rel-shaped, blue-green with numerous dark aerotopes in cells, (3.2) 4-10 (13) x (7.7) 8-15 μm; end cells spherical and rounded. Heterocytes intercalary, solitary, rounded, nearly spherical, rarely slightly oval, (8) 9.4-15 (16) μm in diameter. Akinetes intercalary, solitary or (less frequently) in pairs or up to 3 in a row, distant from heterocytes, oval to long-oval or wide cylindrical with rounded ends and colourless exospore, 15-37 x 9-21 μm.  [details]

Harmful effect Anatoxin-a discovered in pure bloom in Sardinia, Italy by Bruno et al. (1994). Anatoxin-a and cylindrospermopsin have been related to this species by Park et al. (1993) and Briand et al. (2008). [details]

Identification According to sequencing related to coiled D. circinale and D. crassum. Variability is not very wide, the shape of mature akinetes varies from oval to cylindrical. [details]

Remark Heterocysts, nitrogen fixing filamentous form [details]
