Arabella mutans (Chamberlin, 1919), previously considered circumtropical in distribution, is revised using a combination of soft-part, setal, and maxillary characters. Emphasis is placed on adopting a population approach to evaluating character states. Poorly preserved, isolated, or juvenile individuals may not be identifiable to species based on the criteria advocated here. Seven species with non-overlapping geographic ranges are recognized. Arabella mutans s. s. is restricted to tropical Polynesia. Arabella novecrinita Crossland, 1924 is recorded from the western Indian Ocean. Arabella logani Crossland, 1924 and A. atlantica Crossland, 1924 are recognized as distinct species, and recorded from the Red Sea and Cape Verde Islands, respectively. Arabella multidentata (Ehlers, 1887) is recognized to encompass western Atlantic and Caribbean forms. Two new species are erected: Arabella panamensis for specimens from Pacific Panama, and A. monroi from the Galápagos.
