Note Hirudo muricata Linnaeus, 1758 (now...
Type species Hirudo muricata Linnaeus, 1758 (now Pontobdella muricata) CANNOT be the type species of Pontobdella. Leach (1815) included three species in his new genus Pontobdella. These were: Pontobdella verrucata Leach, 1815 : 11. Pontobdella areolata Leach, 1815 : 10. Pontobdella spinulosa Leach, 1815 : 12. Therefore Hirudo muricata Linnaeus, 1758 (now Pontobdella muricata) cannot be the type species of Pontobdella by subsequent designation as it was not originally included in the genus (ICZN article 67.2).. However, for example Llewellyn (1966) and Sawyer (1986) both incorrectly list Pontobdella muricata as the type species of Pontobdella. What the type species is requires further research but as all three possible candidates are supposedly also synonyms of Hirudo muricata, so choosing one of them is moot, and H. muricata has not been removed as type species in the WoRMS record.
