Nomenclature On his page 1 of his monograph Graff (1877)writes: "In der Literatur finden sich nebeneinander die Bezeichnungen Myzostomum und Myzostoma - die letztere als die unzweifelhaft richtigere wird von mir durchwegs angewendet werden, obgleich die erstere Bezeichnung die Priorität für sich hat." In translation: "In the literature will find the labels next to each other Myzostomum and Myzostoma - the latter as the undoubtedly more correct is by me consistently applied, although the former name has priority". This is incorrect as Myzostomum as first published is a nomen nudum. [details]

Grammatical gender Stoma (mouth) is a Greek neuter noun. Therefore all genera combinations ending in 'stoma' are neuter in gender. Leuckart's type species, Myzostoma cirriferum, confirms the gender, and a high percentage of species authors for Myzostoma have also created neuter adjectival names. [details] Publication date Grygier (1992:132) accurately summarizes the history of the the early usages of Myzostoma, leading to the true date the name is available from as follows: "The genus Myzostoma Leuckart, 1836 is often spelled Myzostomum and the date of authorship is often given as 1827 or 1830. Leuckart (1827) wrote only, ' ... ein neues Genus, welches ich als Schmarotzerthier einige Male auf dem Discus der Comatula mediterranea gefunden und Myzostomum parasiticum genannt habe.' Sole mention of a host does not constitute an indication, and since there was no illustration or other indication, both Myzostomum and M. parasiticum are nomina nuda here. Leuckart 1830 was a report of a lecture delivered by him about this genus, this time spelled Myzostoma, and two additional species, M. glabrum and M. costatum; again, no indications validated any of these names and they are nomina nuda as of that date. Leuckart (1836) finally gave a diagnosis, in Latin, of the genus Myzostoma, which made the name available with the type species by monotypy Myzostoma cirriferum Leuckart, 1836. Subsequent usages of the spelling Myzostomum, based on Leuckart (1827), are unjustified emendations and are to be treated as objective junior synonyms of Myzostoma Leuckart, 1836." [details] |
