Taxonomy Since 1999, a number of molecular works have shown that T. chalcogramma could be deeply nested in a clade that contains the Gadus spp. Hence, it has been suggested to assign chalcogrammus to Gadus.
None of these works were a complete taxonomic re-assessment of the Gadidae (or Gadinae sometimes), with a complete phylogeny including the problematic Theragra finnmarchica, sometimes thought to be a synonym of chalcogrammus. There is always the risk that including finnmarchica in the analysis would modify the taxonomy, and then again the name of this highly commercial species.
However, more evidence have been published since 2015, and this risk decreases, especially if Theragra is definitively put in the synonymy of Gadus.
