Population dynamics (abundance and distribution) of Acartia species and the influence of physical (temperature, tide) chemical (salinity, suspended material, pH, dissolved oxygen and percentage of water saturation) and biological parameter (chlorophyll a) were studied from zooplankton samples obtained in May (autumn), July (winter) and October (spring) of 2001 and in January (summer) of 2002, at 10 sampling station distributed along the Cananeia-Iguape Lagoon Estuarine System (SELCI), São Paulo State, Brazil. Three copepods species of the Acartiidae family are identified: Acartia danae, Acartia lilljeborgi and Acartia tonsa, the last two being found throughout the study period and A. danae only in the autumn. The population of A. lilljeborgi and A. tonsa are constituted by juvenile (copepodite CI-CV) and adult, with female predominance, showing that these species breed year round. In the SELCI, both species tolerate wide variations of salinity (0.8 to 33.4) and temperature (18.8°C to 27.6°C) indicating that they are euryhaline and eurithermic. Acartia lilljeborgi is frequent and abundant in the north and south region especially during summer and winter respectively, where the water salinity ranged from
11.5 to 33.4 and the value of chlorophyll a from 1.3 to 17 mg.m-3 , while A. tonsa is dominant in the inner area of the estuary, mainly in winter and spring, as in water salinity from
0.8 to 16.7 and high values of chlorophyll a from 16 to 22.4 mg.m-3 . However, the results indicate that the spatial and temporal distribution of these two specie, as well as the distribution of their abundance in the SELCI do not have a defined pattern.
The statistical analysis ((Kruskal-Wallis, CCA, Spearman Coefficient) carried out showed that salinity and chlorophyll a are the main variables that influenced the abundance and distribution of the two Acartia in the SELCI.
