Zooplankton recolonization of lakes recovering from acidificiion may occur through hatching of dormant eggs in the sediments. This study investigated possible effects of pH on diapausing egg density and viability using eggs collected from three icidified and three circumneutral lakes near Sudbury, Ontario. Egg densities in circurnceutral lakes ranged from 7,000 to 68,000 eggs m9, whereas densities in the acid lakes rangec irom 1,000 to 9,000 eggs m". Hatching expeiiments at pH 4.5,5.5 and 6.5 shawed that there is no effect of pH manipulations within lakes, but suggests an effect of lake pH across lakes. Egg hatching ranged from 22-38 % in acid lakes and from 12-15 % in circumneutrii lakes. This study suggests that egg densities are lower in acid lakes, but nevertheless sgg banks exist. Eggs collected from the acid lakes remained viable during long-term expcsire to low pH and are possible sources of recolonizing zooplankton in recovering lakes.
