Taxonomic remark comments from Maria Holynska: The species was originally named by Lindberg (1955) as Cyclops abyssorum f. carinthica. From the original description it is not clear whether Lindberg considered this form a subspecific or infrasubspecific (“forma”) entity. However, in later monographs (Lindberg 1957; Einsle 1975) the name “carinthicus” was adopted as the name of a subspecies (Cyclops abyssorum carinthicus); therefore the name “carinthicus” refer to a subspecies (See Articles 45.6.4. and 45.6.4.1. of the ICZN below), and the use of the name is regulated by the Code. Concerning the change in subsequent spelling, from “carinthica” to “carinthicus”, it is a mandatory change (see Article 34. and 34.2. of the ICZN). ”Cyclops” is a masculine noun and “carinthicus” is a masculine adjective.
Article 34. Mandatory changes in spelling consequent upon changes in rank or combination. 34.2. Species-group names . The ending of a Latin or latinized adjectival or participial species-group name must agree in gender with the generic name with which it is at any time combined [Art. 31.2]; if the gender ending is incorrect it must be changed accordingly (the author and date of the name remain unchanged [Art. 50.3.2]).
