Taxonomy The authority of the family name Lernaeidae is problematic. In the 10th edition of Systema Naturae, Linnaeus (1758) established the name Lernaea Linnaeus, 1758 to accommodate 3 species, the first of which was Lernaea cyprinacea Linnaeus, 1758. This is the type species of the genus Lernaea. In 1822, de Blainville established a new genus, Lernaeocera, based on L. branchialis Linnaeus, 1767 as its type. Unfortunately, de Blainville also included Lernaea cyprinacea in his new genus, as Lernaeocera cyprinacea. This action resulted in nearly a century of confusion between Lernaea and Lernaeocera, which impacted classification at multiple levels from generic to ordinal. Wilson's (1917) revision of the family Lernaeidae recognised 4 subfamilies: Lernaeinae, Lernaeocerinae, Lernaeenicinae and Pennellinae. His key to subfamilies serves to diagnose each subfamily. In using the subfamily Lernaeinae to accommodate Lernaea and relatives, Wilson (1917) established the modern concept of the Lernaeidae as distinct from the other 3 subfamilies which are now classified in the siphonostomatoid family Pennellidae. [details]
