Nine species of the southern African members of Bodotriidae are described, three of which are new and two newly designated sub species. The general distribution of the subfamily Vaunthompsoniinae is discussed and a more detailed account is given of the distribution of its southern African members. The subfamily in southern African waters has a high rate of endemism and a high diversity, but a very low frequency of occurrence.
