Classification McIntosh believed his specimen belonged in Ampharetidae, although he also compared it to Pista (Terebellidae). There are no figures but Hartman supplement (1965) appears to place the genus in Terebellidae, and the description of the branchiae supports this. [details]
Synonymy Holthe (1986:120) had examined syntypes of type species 'macduffi' and placed it as Axionice maculata, thus Melinella is a junior synonym of Axionice. [details]
