Taxonomic remark The amphipod genus Themisto Guerin-Meneville, 1825, was replaced with Euthemisto by Bovallius (1887) because it was a junior homonym of the nudibranch Themisto Oken (1815). Parathemisto Boeck (1870) and Themisto Guerin-Meneville were combined under Themisto by Stephensen (1924), corrected by Barnard (1930) to Parathemisto, the name currently used by most zoologists. Volume 3 of Okens Lehrbuch der Naturgeschichte (1815) was placed, however, on the Official List of Rejected Works by Opinion 417 of the International Commission of Zoological Nomenclature (1956), which ruled that no name published in Oken's volume 3 acquired the status of availability by reason of having been so published. Consequently the name Themisto, first made available by Guerin-Meneville and a senior synonym of Parathemisto, is the valid name of the amphipod genus. [details]
