Ecology Infaunal–epifaunal, sometimes epiphytic (Lee et al., 1969); in high-latitude fjords and estuaries in surface seasonal water layer, sometimes close to a glacier (Hald and Korsun, 1997), dominant in lagoons along the Atlantic seaboard of North America from Canada to Long Island Sound, USA; Baltic; sometimes regarded as an indicator of cold water but its occurrence as far south as Long Island does not support this view.
