Etymology Not stated. The derivation of Amphicteis Grube has not yet been discovered. It is not a personal name from Greek and Roman writings, and is not a dictionary word. Grube considered it feminine. [details]

Grammatical gender Feminine. Grube and following authors have treated Amphicteis as feminine, for example Amphicteis invalida Grube (instead of invalidus). [details]

Synonymy Schiaparelli & Jirkov (2016), and earlier Jirkov (2011) consider that Paramphicteis Caullery, 1944, Phyllamphicteis Augener, 1918, and Pseudoamphicteis Hutchings, 1977 are synonyms of Amphicteis Grube, 1850. Reuscher et al (2015) disagree, keeping Paramphicteis as a senior synonym of Pseudoamphicteis Hutchings, 1977, with Phyllamphicteis also valid due to unique branchiae. [details]
