Type designation Type species Spio mecznikowianus Claparede 1870 by subsequent designation. Mesnil created Microspio for the existing names Spio mecznikowianus and Spio atlanticus Langerhans, 1880. Söderström (1920: 248) named the type species as Spio mecznikowianus, perhaps because he included the junior name Spio atlanticus as a synonym of Microspio mecznikowianus. However, Microspio atlantica is regarded as a valid name currently (eg Fonseca-Gonzalez et al, 2022: 342), since Hannerz (1956) re-validated it.
