The subspecific epithet simplex is a Latin adjective meaning 'single', 'simple', or 'not complex', and presumably refers to the neuropodial hooks of the subspecies, described as having a "curved unidentate tip which never has any prolongation or sign of an arista", in opposition to the stem form Aricidea suecica Eliason, 1920, "described as having an arista or slender blade projecting beyond the apex of the neuropodial hook in the middle of the body" (Day, 1963: 365). Status Erected after 1960 as a variety of species Aricidea suecica Eliason. The Code Article 15 deems such names as infrasubspecific, and thus not available. Indeed Day's text seems to indicate he was principally just recording A. suecica with type locality of the Öresund from South Africa (Day states the observation is a new record for South Africa, which must be a reference only to A suecica). However, if used as species or subspecies before 1985 it becomes a subspecies from its original date (1963 in this case). As at least Hartman (1978) treated the name as a species, it is an available name. [details]
