Taxonomy The nominal species Serpula vermicularis has been reported from Arctic to tropical conditions, neither ecologically nor biogeographically a likely distribution. Presently a number of species (partly misidentified previously as S. vermicularis) with a biogeographically more restricted distribution have been discerned, and the name S.vermicularis should be reserved for the Atlantic-Mediterranean taxon (ten Hove & Kupriyanova 2009). Moreover, the name S. vermicularis has been used in the fouling literature for juvenile stages of Hydroides elegans (Haswell, 1883), with operculum a simple funnel only (ten Hove & Ben-Eliahu 2005). [details]
