Authority The name Chalina was first coined by Grant (1861: 76) as one of three genus names of the 'third order' Chalinida. The 'order' Chalinida was defined but the three genera were not separately defined, nor were any species described for the three genera. These facts do not meet the conditions of ICZN art. 12, thus making Grant's name a nomen nudum and unavailable. Bowerbank (1862: 1120) used the name Chalina, provided a definition and named a type species (Halichondria oculata), and thus became the author of a valid genus name Chalina (ICZN G and art. 50).  [details]
