Description Description: Arm length to 9 cm, disc diameter to 3 cm. Larger disc plates surrounded by irregular, single rows of platelets. The relatively short arms appear smooth due to the presence of tiny lateral spines held against the arms. Background colour usually pale yellowish-orange with a distinctive pattern of purple or black on the disc and banding on the arms. Habitat: lower littoral and deeper, under bolders and among coral.
General distribution: from the Red Sea to North Australia (Tortonese, 1980); tropical, Indo-west-central Pacific Ocean, littoral waters (Rowe & Gates, 1995); Indo-Pacific (Richmond, 1998).
Also distributed in SE Arabia, Maldive area, Ceylon, Bay of Bengal, East Indies, north Australia, Philippine, China, south Japan and South Pacific Is. (Clark & Rowe, 1971); Australia (Rowe & Gates, 1995).
