Editor's comment Molina-Acevedo & Carrera-Parra (2017) have examined the holotype of Paramarphysa longula Ehlers, the type species of Paramarphysa, and placed it in genus Nicidion. If this is correct then Paramarphysa is a synonym of Nicidion, not of Marphysa. However, these authors made no comment on this point, perhaps overlooking that P longula was type species of Paramarphysa. [details]

Synonymy Paramarphysa diagnostically lacks branchiae, but the genus name appears not to have been used since 1992. Orensanz (1990: 61) appears to be the first to synonymise Paramarphysa informally with Marphysa by stating "Some genera, based on the reduction or absence of the branchiae, are not included in the key. These are Paramarphysa (abranchiate counterpart of Marphysa), Nicidion (counterpart to Eunice), and Lysibranchia (branchiate counterpart to Lysidice). I do not consider the absence or presence of branchiae (or the number of branchial filaments) as a character of diagnostic value for onuphid or eunicid genera." Much later Zanol et al (2014: 93) produced a formal synonymy for Marphysa which included Paramarphysa as one of the several junior synonyms. However, subsequently Molina-Acevedo & Carrera-Parra (2017) have examined the holotype of Paramarphysa longula Ehlers, the type species of Paramarphysa and placed it in genus Nicidion. If this is correct then Paramarphysa is a synonym of Nicidion, not of Marphysa. This does not mean that other former Paramarphysa species cannot be Marphysa species, but each may need to be checked again. [details]
