Etymology Not stated. The Greek noun 'ilys, -yos, f.' means mud and the Latin noun 'vestis -is f' means garment. Therefore 'ilyvestis' must be a description of the worms' outer surface which was described as heavily mud-coated. Hartman wrote: "They grossly resemble a gray, flat, compacted and elongated mudcake." [details]
