Taxonomy Pettibone (1970) writes that "Leanira calcis Hartman from southern California, based on a middle fragment, is referred herein to N. areolata. The characteristic basal spurlike processes of the branchiae and the large ventral ctenidia (accessory processes or ftmbriated organs), medial to the ventral cirri, are also found on specimens of N. areolata from Japan and southern California." [details]
