Holotype LACM AHF Poly 1945, geounit Farallon Islands [details]
From editor or global species database
Depth range 1020-3060 m. [details]

Distribution Pacific Ocean: off California. [details]

Etymology Not specifically stated. The species is named farallonensis after its type locality, west of Farallon Islands (California). [details]

Habitat Deep-water species found in sediments having fine silts and clays. [details]

Reproduction Numerous specimens of the type series with oocytes in the coelom; holotype with irregularly shaped oocytes in coelom measuring up to 40 μm across widest dimension. [details]

Synonymy Without giving any details Sene Silva (2007:87 unpublished thesis) placed Ophelina farallonensis as a new synonym of Ophelina abranchiata Støp-Bowitz, 1948 from Greenland. The synonymy proposal is recorded here but not adopted. Sene Silva does not record examining specimens, and the large geographic separation of the two species type localities is a factor to be considered. Blake (2000: 160) had originally made the comparison to O abranchiata. The question must also be asked as to whether abranchiate 'Ophelina' species really belong in that genus. [details]

Type locality West of Farallon Islands, off San Francisco, California, USA, Pacific Ocean (37.459°, -123.2832°). [details]

Type material Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Los Angeles (AHF Poly 1945, 1946). [details]
