Etymology The specific epithet articulata is a Latin adjective meaning 'articulated' or 'jointed', and though not explicitly stated refers clearly to the articulated antennae and tentacular cirri of the species, described by the author as being "the most outstanding peculiarity" of the species: "tentaculis in basi remotis, lobi cephalici longitudinem fere aequantibus, subtentacula magna superantibus sexarticulatis; [...] cirri tentaculares articulati longissimi ad segmentum 5um patentes. [...] [details]

Homonymy Nereis articulata Ehlers, 1887 is senior primary homonym to Nereis articulata Hsueh, 2020 from Taiwan. Ehlers uses the genus Nereis, without subgenera. N. articulata Ehlers is not a nomen oblitum, and the original name has been used several times since 1900, before the species was recombined. Therefore it is not possible to reuse the same name, and the Hsueh (2020) name for the Taiwan Nereis must be replaced. [details]
