Classification Malmgren (1866) included the trichobranchids in his family Terebellacea. Most of the terebellid genera were in subfamily Amphitritea, but he gave the trichobranchids of today two Terebellacea subfamilies, Trichobranchidea (for Trichobranchus) and Canephoridea for Terebellides (the senior synonym of Canephorus). Also there were further Terebellacea subfamilies Polycirridea, and Artacamacea. Fauvel (1927: 288) had Trichobranchus and Octobranchus in Trichobranchinae, and Terebellides in Canephorinae, with both subfamilies part of Terebellidae. In recent times Garraffoni & Lana (2004) continued the status of trichobranchids as terebellid subfamily Trichobranchinae, but treating trichobranchids at family rank is more usual. There appears to be no need to maintain subfamilies in Trichobranchidae itself (only three valid genera), therefore Malmgren's subfamily names are not necessary. [details]
