In Gebel Abu Shama, Wadi Umm Gerfan et El Qatamiya sections, the c. 150 meters of limestones of the Observatory et Qurn formations, which are located in Eastern Egypt, between the Nile valley et the Gulf of Suez, yielded rich benthic foraminiferal assemblages of Middle Eocene age. Over fifty species were identified. Two new species (Idalina cuvillieri et Planotrillina deserti) et a new genus (Planotrillina) are herein described. Based on some indirect evidences we infer that these assemblages can be assigned to the NP 16 et/or NP 17 biozones, but it is impossible to establish the exact position of the Lutetian-Bartonian boundary. However interval of co-occurence of last Idalina cuvillieri et the first Pseudolacazina schwagerinoides named herein as « episode P/I», allows to subdivise locally the calcareous series. The limestones were deposited in a shallow lagoon located on a sea-mount overlooking basins in which terrigenous sediments with abundant Nummulites et planktonic microfossils are accumulated. Numerous egyptian Foraminifers are known from north-tethyan margins, with the exception of Dictyoconus egyptiensis, Lockhartia et Somalina. On the other hand, Dictyoconoides cooki which is otherwise abundant in the Middle East was not found in Egypt.
