Synonymy The genus Zellerella Wilde (2006) is probably a synonym of Parafusulinella Stewart, 1970 and/or Nipperella Solovieva, 1983.
Original description Diagnosis: A distinct genus of fusulinellid that has a shell that is aninflated fusiform with concave lateral slopes and prominent chomata. Zellerella is a transitional genus, bridging the gap between Fusulinella, typically Late Atokan in age, and Wedekindellina, Early Desmoinesian in age. The shape of Zellerella is an extreme shape of Fusulinella, with sharply pointed poles, concave lateral slopes, and well-developed chomata bordering a straight tunnel, with a slight tendency for the septa to show an undulatory pattern. Such tendency is offset with a Wedekindellina look, including numerous whorls, tightly coiled shell with a small proloculus, slight axial filling, largely confined to the polar region of each whorl, shell exaggerated by the tapered appearance of the chomata and thick inner and outer tectorium bordering a tectum and diaphanotheca. Secondary material is noticeable in sagittal section, where the numerous septa are thickened by it. The straight, narrow tunnel is bordered by massively tapered chomata. One could argue that Zellerella is nothing more than an early Eowaeringella, however, the latter is elongate, slender as a rule, such as in Wedekindellina, has less secondary material, and has a gradually widening tunnel. The spirotheca of Eowaeringella, while well developed, is thin and without the abundant secondary material displays a thicker diaphanotheca. The septa are very wavy in Eowaeringella, and with less secondary material present; the septa do not express themselves with the thickening seen in Zellerella.
Occurrence: Zellerella is apparently confined to the Desmoinesian and Early Missourian, whereas Eowaeringella did not start until very early Missourian.
