Group description Groenwieren danken hun naam aan de groene kleur. Ze zijn groen doordat ze - anders dan rood- en bruinwieren - enkel bladgroen of chlorofyl als kleurstof bevatten. De kleur van groenwieren kan uiteenlopen van bleek geelgroen tot donker blauwgroen of bruingroen. De groep omvat zowel microscopisch kleine, vrijzwemmende, eencellige organismen, als grote, buisvormige tot struikachtige planten. De meeste groenwieren komen voor in zout of zoet water, maar sommige soorten leven op het land, waarbij ze bijvoorbeeld groeien op bomen of rotsen. Een aantal soorten hebben ook een symbiotische relatie met schimmels, waarbij men spreekt van korstmossen of lichenen.Naamsverklaring:
