Taxonomy This is an invalid name. McCrady used Nemopsis gibbesi for a medusa and a pelagic polyp (which proved to be unrelated). The medusa was the recognized by Agassiz (1862) as Nemopsis bachei, acting thus as first revisor and restricting the name to the medusa. Unfortunately, Hartlaub (1899, 1903) applied the name to the polyp stage as Margelopsis gibbesi. Formally, this is thus an invalid name and a new name must be provided for the polyp stage described by McCrady. The medusae described and figured under this name by Mayer (1910: 82, pl. 9 figs 4-7) also belong to the same species. Mayer attributed the name to Hartlaub as Margelopsis gibbesi, but this is not correct. [details]
