The presence of the endemic species Pelmatohydra baikalensis (Swarezewsky, 1923) in Lake Baikal is confirmed. Based upon analysis of external morphology and morphology of nematocysts of the closely related species Pelmatohydra baikalensis (Swarezewsky 1923) 1 comb. nov. and P oligactis (Pallas, 1766), these species are assigned to the genus Pelmatohydra. A new diagnosis of this genus is given. Pelmatohydra baicalensis (Schulze, 1927) is acknowledged as a junior synonym of Pelmatohydra baikalensis (Swarezewsky 1923). A redescription of P baikalensis (Swarezewsky 1923) is given using data on the karyotype. The karyotype is described for the first time. Discoveries of H. circumcincta Schulze 1914 and P oligactis (Pallas, 1766) in Lake Baikal are reported for the first time. Doubt is cast upon habitation of H. oxycnidoides Schulze, 1927 (= H. oxyenida Schulze, 1914) in Lake Baikal.
