Dunkirk is a French commune, the second capital of the Nord department. With 91,386 inhabitants, the city is the fourth most populous in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, the first outside the city of Lille. Its inhabitants are called Dunkerquois and Dunkerquoise. The "city of Jean Bart" is the center of the urban community of Dunkerque Grand Littoral which comprises 18 municipalities with 200 000 inhabitants. It is also the heart of the 34th urban area of France with more than 265,000 inhabitants in 56 municipalities, including 4 of the Pas-de-Calais. Through agreements with other cities of the Côte d'Opale and those of Belgium West Flanders, the Dunkirk area is doomed ultimately to belong to a metropolis ranging from Boulogne-sur-Mer to Ostend.1
