Etymology The species name was derived from Latin intermedius, in between and referred to the intermediate position of the species between cyclorhagid and homalorhagid taxa, as Higgins (1969, p. 114) stated: "In this paper I shall resurrect the Lang-Zelinka dispute which has been mentioned above because I share Zelinka's experience of finding too few specimens - specimens which, as did the Zelinka collection from the Gulf of Baja, clearly reveal morphology intermediate, in several characteristics, between the cyclorhagid and homalorhagid taxa."
