The taxonomic status of the genus Echinogammarus is discussed in relation to a great number of related genera. The type material or topotypic material of all studied taxa was (re)examined (if still existing) and compared with many (about 4000) newly collected samples and material from other museums and institutes in Europe. The morphological characters used in this work are identical to those used by Karaman & Pinkster, 1977 a, b; 1987. The genera Chaetogammarus, Marinogammarus, Ostiogammarus, Homoeogammarus, and Parhomoeogammarus are considered synonyms of Echinogammarus. Unlike Karaman, 1977 a, b, and Barnard & Barnard, 1983 the genera Pectenogammarus, Fontogammarus, Sarothrogammarus, Neogammarus, Rhipidogammarus, Longigammarus, and Eulimnogammarus are preserved as independent genera. This is mainly based on morphological differences in the mouthparts. The characters of Echinogammarus are discussed and a new definition of the genus is given. Complete descriptions and many illustrations of males (and if necessary of females) are given of all species known with certainty from Europe, Asia Minor and northern Africa. Five new species are described: E. kretensis, E. sardus, E. reductus, E. kerkuraios, and E. platvoeti. One subspecies is raised to the specific rank: E. monomerus. The variability of the various characters (both seasonal and geographical) is discussed and a key is given of both the Echinogammarus generacomplex and the (sub)species of the genus Echinogammarus. If available, information about the ecology of the various taxa is given.
