Note This note was kindly assembled by Gary Poore:...
Type species This note was kindly assembled by Gary Poore: Asterope Philippi, 1840 was replaced by Cylindroleberis Brady, 1868: 127 [because Asterope was preoccupied] and Asteropina Strand, 1928 is an unneccessary replacement name for preoccupied Asterope (Gary Poore, personal communication). The type species of Asterope (and consequently of Cylindroleberis) is Asterope elliptica Philippi, 1840 accepted as Cylindroleberis elliptica (Philippi, 1840). Cylindroleberis is a replacement name for Asterope Philippi, 1840. As such it does not have a type species of its own but assumes that of Asterope. This issue is covered by ICZN Article 67.8.
Asterope was described with only one species, Asterope elliptica Philppi, 1840, its type species by monotypy.
Sylvester-Bradley’s (1961) designation of Asterope mariae as type species of Cylindroleberis was both wrong (replacement names don’t have type species) and unnecessary (Asterope already has a type species).
In WoRMS the type species should be attached to Asterope, even though it is an unaccepted name (junior homonym), not to Cylindroleberis (replacement name). ICZN Recommendation 67B advises that type species should be cited in its original combination. [details]
