The family Phyllodocidae is a large family of errant polychaetes comprising over 40 genera world-wide (Fauchald 1977) with some 20 genera recorded from the NE Atlantic. Species of particular genera are difficult to determine due either to inadequate definitions or to the fact that diagnostic characters may not be of specific importance e.g. Anaitides Czerniavsky 1882, Eulalia sensu lato and Eteone Savigny 1818. During an examination of the Irish species of Phyllodocidae, many specimens referable to Anaitides subulifera Eliason 1961 were found. The author was informed by Mr F. Pleijel, however, that A. subulifera might be a synonym of Anaitides rosea McIntosh 1877. On examination of the A. rosea type material, this has been shown to be the case. Certain structures on the proboscis not described by McIntosh were observed. This has necessitated a redefinition of the genus Anaitides and a redescription of the species A. rosea. Notes on its synonyms, ecology and distribution, and a key to the genera of the Phyllodocinae are included.
