Etymology The specific epithet elitoralis means 'away from the littoral', and is composed by the Latin prefix e-, meaning 'out' or 'away', and the Latin adjective litoralis, meaning 'of the seashore' or 'littoral'. It refers to the depth range of the species, found in the lower eulittoral and upper archibenthic zone, between 80-510 m, and in opposition to the depth range of the close and similar species Eunereis longissima (Johnston, 1840), usually recorded only in the littoral zone: ''Nur einmal ist - so viel ich weiss - Nereis longissima ausserhalb der Litoralzone angegeben. [...] (Eliaon, 1962: 252). [details]
