Description Primarily an oceanic and epipelagic species; usually mesopelagic in the tropics (Ref. 1602). Also inhabits relatively cool waters below 300 m and may enter lagoons. Makes use of their tail to aggregate, then stun the small fishes on which they feed (Ref. 1602). Squids may also be included in the diet. Ovoviviparous, with at least two young. Utilized for human consumption, liver oil for vitamin extraction, hides for leather, and fins for shark-fin soup. [details]
