Taxonomy This species is one of the many ostracod species poorly described and illustrated in the 19th Century, which was posteriorly recorded from many distant localities in the world oceans. Its identity is still uncertain, because no holotype nor lectotype nor neotype has been designated so far. Several authors have identified trachyleberidid spiny valves as Cythere melobesioides, also with distinct generic assignments (e.g., Apatihowella, Echinocythereis, Henryhowella). However a definitive generic assignment for this species must await a lectotype or neotype designation. Therefore, this combination (proposed by Yassini & Jones (1987. Ostracoda in Lake Illawarra) and followed by Howe & McKenzie (1989. Recent marine Ostracoda from Darwin and North-Western Australia)), is herein considered invalid. [details]
