Editor's comment : Authority: According to Maciolek (2000) the description of López-Jamar, 1989 is based on and extending her unpublished 1983 thesis description. However, López-Jamar appears to be describing his own material from Golfo de Cadiz, and thus the authorship cannot be Maciolek in López-Jamar. The circumstance is undesirable and may require further resolution (for example to determine what is the type material, if it exists). Nevertheless Maciolek (2000) subsequently included Mediterranean and Canary Islands material in her further description as well as material from offshore North America Atlantic, although not the López-Jamar type material. Editor's comment : Type Material: The type material can only be that which López-Jamar reported and described from Golfo de Cadiz. These are the syntypes. Their location may be unknown. Subsequent authors do not include them in material examined. However, Maciolek (2000) and later Meißner et al (2014) appear to assume material of Maciolek's unpublished thesis can be, subsequently to López-Jamar, made the type series. Maciolek (2000) names the holotype as USNM 80476, collected off Beaufort, as so labelled earlier in her thesis, but only López-Jamar could name a holotype. The appropriate action would have been to find and fix a specimen from López-Jamar's Golfo de Cadiz material as a lectotype. At minimum whether these worms still exist should be determined. So Maciolek's holotype designation is invalid. Since several similar species over a wide geographic area may be involved (differences in the descriptions have been noted) the situation is unclear and requires further study. [details]
Syntype No holotype was designated. There is no information given on the location of the original López-Jamar (syntypes) material if deposited in a collection, but it seems unlikely that such deep-sea specimens were discarded. Instituto Espanol de Oceanografia is mentioned by the author. [details]
