Description Sabella euplaeana of plate 48 is a Hydroides with a double operculum (fig 21), with fig.22 showing close up of the operculum, showing long plain spines with tips all curved in the same direction [details]
Editor's comment The combination as H. euplaeana was used as valid by Zibrowius (1972:116-117). Thus Sabella euplaeana cannot be a nomen oblitum. Referrals to the species known as Hydroides pseudouncinata Zibrowius, 1968 are in literature, but H. euplaeana is the senior name. Zibrowius (1968) had previously placed it with Hydroides uncinata, but that name is also indeterminable, so is not a suitable 'accepted' name. So Sabella euplaeana is most likely the species currently known as Hydroides pseudouncinata Zibrowius, 1968 (but possibly H. dianthus or H. nigra). A re-evaluation may be required. [details]
Etymology Not stated, but Sabella euplaeana was evidently named after the Roman name for Caiola Island, Naples, where Delle Chaije mentions it was collected. Caiola is modern day Gaiola, known as Euplaea in Roman times. [details]
Grammatical gender Gender-variable geographical adjective (-anus, -ana), with correct original feminine ending. [details]
Type locality Caiola (= Gaiola/Euplaea) Island, Naples, Italy, Tyrrhenian Sea, Mediterranean. Geolocation: 40.7917° 14.1869°
