Taxonomy Nogueira, Fitzhugh & Hutchings (2013: 236) in their formal systematics presentation did not indicate which genera they placed in their new family Telothelepodidae, besides the type genus Telothelepus Day, 1955. However, their Fig. 21 consensus tree indicates the other genera included were Decathelepus, Glossothelepus, Rhinothelepus, and Parathelepus. In 2017 Nogueira, Fitzhugh, Hutchings & Carrerette synonymized Decathelepus to Parathelepus, synonymized Glossothelepus to Rhinothelepus, moved two Rhinothelepus to Parathelepus, and synonymized Kritzlerius to Parathelepus. They created genus Mesopothelepus for a Telothelepus species. Thus four genera remained in the group - Telothelepus, Parathelepus, Mesopothelepus, and Rhinothelepus. However, these authors noted that Telothelepus, Rhinothelepus, and Decathelepus were not monophyletic according to their cladograms based on morphology. This was troubling news as regards these genera being distinct and 'useful' for taxonomy.
Stiller et al (2020) had only one representative of Telothelepodidae in their analysis, Rhinothelepus lobatus, the type species of that genus, but it placed firmly with Thelepus and other Thelepodinae, and thus they synonymized Telothelepodidae into Thelepodinae, while noting it would be useful to have molecular data for further species of the former Telothelepodidae. [details]

Diagnosis authors: "Members of Telothelepodidae are distinguished by the shape of the elongate, narrow ‘upper lips’ [character 14(0), ie., narrow elongate versus circular]. This is the only synapomorphy presented [...] that is not homoplasious."
In terms of recognising a Telothelepus the distinctive character is a large elongate upper tentacular lobe (cephalic lobe) on the head. The lobe is 'frilly' edged and carries numerous tentacles (see Day 1967:734).
