Nomenclature Amphictenidae derives from genus Amphictene Savigny, 1822, and was widely used. [details]
Status For a long time Amphictenidae Grube 1850 was the accepted family name instead of the lesser-used Pectinariidae, a family name introduced as Pectinarea by Quatrefages (1866). It is apparently the 1941 article by Hartman on Pectinariidae that reversed the usage. Perhaps Hartman initiated the change as Amphictene is the younger genus name (but this doesn't require the family name to change). Uncertainty followed over various names, culminating in the ICZN Opinion 1225 of 1982 in favour of Pectinaria and Pectinariidae. [details]
