N. ovarius sp. nov. and its heteronereids are described. The new species, a small nereid inhabiting rocky-shore algal turf, has few paragnaths, fusiform peristomial cirri, superior notopodial lobes posteriorly reduced, basically bidentate notopodial falcigers and a male heteronereid with a 3rd caudate region of modified parapodia. The life cycle is outlined. Species with similarities to N. ovarius are discussed, especially N. jacksoni Kinberg. N. jacksoni sensu Kott is in part a misidentification; N. jacksoni reducta Hartmann-Schroder is raised to species status.
